# BI-K Energy — Data Center Cooling and Heat Recovery

> One system cools your data center and turns waste heat into revenue: platform PUE ~1.10, cooling through a blackout, and heat sold to the district network.

## Revolutionize the economics of cooling with one integrated energy system.

One system, two modes: cools when needed, generates electricity when it pays. The switch is automatic, driven by operating conditions. Waste heat stops being a cost and becomes an asset.

## AI has rewritten the rules of cooling.

- **Density** — AI racks reach 150 kW. Cooling has become the data center's first operating cost.
- **Continuity** — In a blackout, IT is protected by the electrical UPS. Cooling is not. A real operational risk.
- **Compliance** — EnEfG requires new data centers to reuse a growing share of their waste heat. Today that heat is simply thrown away.

## The platform that rewrites the economics of cooling.

Heat pump when cooling is needed, ORC cycle when generating electricity pays. Automatic transition, patent-pending architecture. It completely changes the cost structure of data centers.

01. **Thermal continuity** — Cooling continues through a blackout, for as long as the electrical UPS lasts. Eliminates CAPEX for cooling batteries: approximately €200K per 10 MW IT.
02. **Capacity unlocked** — The ORC self-generates electricity for auxiliaries. Platform PUE around 1.10. The existing fleet averages around 1.50.
03. **Heat as revenue** — 40,800 MWh / year at 70 – 120 °C for district heating. Or 2,356 MWh / year of electricity from ORC.
04. **Native compliance** — Built to EnEfG and RED III requirements: compliance by design, no retrofit.

## What changes, in figures.

_Reference: 10 MW IT data center, 150 kW/rack._

- **1.10** — platform PUE, prudential baseline
- **40,800 MWh** — of heat for district heating
- **2,356 MWh** — of electricity from the ORC cycle
- **18,200 t** — CO₂ avoided / year
- **<2 m³** — water consumed / year in heat pump mode

## Three ways to work with us.

Every data center starts from a different situation. The platform adapts: whether you already have a thermal network available, whether you want to get ready for tomorrow, or whether you prefer to hand the entire chain to us.

- [RHP Core](https://www.bikenergy.com/en/dhc) — Your data center is already connected to a district heating network. You install the RHP, and recovered heat flows straight into the grid. Lean configuration, immediate value.
- [RHP + Thermal Storage](https://www.bikenergy.com/en/storage) — No DHC network available today. Add thermal storage: you capture the heat, store it, and when the connection arrives you will already be ready. In the meantime, you optimise internally.
- [Energy Integration Platform RHP](https://www.bikenergy.com/en/eaas) — You don't want to manage the thermal chain. We handle it. BI-K positions itself between the data center and the DHC network, orchestrating flows, storage, contracts and revenue sharing.

## From the lab to the plant. It has already happened.

- **First pilot plant running** — The first pilot plant has been running since June 2026. Measured data, not simulations.
- **Beyond expectations** — Operating data confirm the design figures on COP and heat recovery.
- **Search report cleared** — Application filed October 2025, search report positive on all 12 claims. Reversible ORC applied to the data center.

### The team

- **Marco Margotti** — CEO & co-founder. 29 years of B2B technical sales, 17 in industrial cooling, 6 on Kaymacor's ORC. Twenty-nine years of B2B technical sales across refrigeration and energy. Seventeen in industrial cooling, as sales manager and area manager at Stulz (formerly Cosmotec), Pfannenberg, Rittal and Hyfra Industriekühlanlagen of the Lennox International group: Stulz and Rittal are today two of the data center cooling incumbents. In 2014 he founded Bimatek and ran it for twelve years across wood biomass, ORC micro-cogeneration and industrial energy efficiency, six of them on Kaymacor's ORC machines. At BI-K he runs commercial strategy, fundraising and the relationship with utilities and operators. Co-inventor of patent BIT30917. Business Administration in Modena, Master in Energy Management. ([LinkedIn](https://www.linkedin.com/in/margottimarco/))
- **Giuseppe Toniato** — CTO & co-founder. 30+ years in thermal machines, 12 on ORC. Co-founder of Kaymacor, 7 patents. Over thirty years in thermal machines and energy systems. Designer at Pirelli, product manager at Magneti Marelli, then R&D Director at Riello Bruciatori and innovation lead for the Riello Group. In 2014 he co-founded Kaymacor, where he developed, patented and sold the ORChidea micro ORC platform: twelve years of machines in the field, from the first 2 kW unit at CNR in Naples to installations in South Korea and Canada, seven patents filed. At BI-K he leads the engineering of the reversible platform and the 100 kWth prototype. Co-inventor of patent BIT30917. ([LinkedIn](https://www.linkedin.com/in/giuseppe-toniato-b6770941/))

## Who BI-K is for.

Same heat, three different opportunities.

- **Data center operators** — High-density cooling, an EnEfG compliance path through heat delivery to the network, and AI rack capacity from day one. Choose the engagement model that best fits your infrastructure.
- **Utilities and district heating networks** — Contracted, predictable, decarbonised heat. A new thermal asset to integrate into your network, with measurable payback.
- **Investors** — Patent-pending platform cleared by the search report, first pilot plant operational, market driven by AI demand and European heat-recovery mandates. Pre-seed round open.
- **Data center + DHC network together?** — The BI-K Energy RHP (Reversible Heat Pump) Platform was built where the two infrastructures meet. If you are a DC operator with a district heating network nearby, or a utility with a data center in your catchment area, let's talk: this is the use case the platform was designed for.

## Glossary

- **RHP** — Reversible Heat Pump: BI-K's core machine. One thermodynamic cycle that runs as a heat pump to cool, or as an ORC to generate electricity, switching automatically between the two.
- **EnEfG** — Energieeffizienzgesetz: Germany's Energy Efficiency Act. It requires new data centers to reuse a rising share of their waste heat: 10% from 2026, 15% from 2027, 20% from 2028.
- **EED** — Energy Efficiency Directive: the EU's recast energy efficiency law (2023). Among other measures it requires data centers to report their energy use and pushes waste-heat recovery and reuse.
- **ORC cycle** — Organic Rankine Cycle: a thermodynamic cycle that converts low-to-medium temperature heat into electricity, using an organic working fluid instead of water and steam.
- **COP** — Coefficient of Performance: how efficiently a heat pump moves heat. A COP of 4 means 4 units of heat delivered per unit of electricity consumed. Higher is better.
- **CAPEX** — Capital Expenditure: the upfront investment to acquire or build a physical asset (e.g. equipment), as opposed to recurring operating costs (OPEX).
- **OPEX** — Operating Expenditure: the recurring costs of running an asset (e.g. energy, maintenance, staff), as opposed to the upfront investment (CAPEX).
- **SLA** — Service Level Agreement: a contract that sets the guaranteed levels of service (e.g. availability, response times) and the consequences if they aren't met.
- **PUE** — Power Usage Effectiveness: a data center's total energy divided by the energy its IT equipment actually uses. 1.0 is the ideal; the gap above it is overhead, mostly cooling.
- **RED III** — Renewable Energy Directive III: the EU's revised renewable energy directive (2023). It raises binding renewable targets and pushes district heating and waste-heat reuse toward renewable and recovered sources.
- **DHC** — District Heating and Cooling: a network of insulated pipes that delivers heat from a central source to many buildings, instead of each running its own boiler. Common across Europe, especially Germany.
- **The existing fleet averages around 1.50** — Average PUE of the existing data center fleet, used as the comparison baseline. The gap above 1.0 is overhead, mostly cooling.
